Phantom of the Open
Bring something to sit on and whatever you need to stay warm and dry
Our local hero Mark Rylance stars in this amiably daft film The Phantom of the Open about real-life golfing eccentric Maurice Flitcroft, who gatecrashed the 1976 British Open Golf Championship qualification round despite being a complete novice.
It’s a wonderful, witty, heartwarming gem of a film that will have you shouting at the screen for the (under)dog to have his day. Mark Rylance is utterly spellbinding as would-be professional golfer Flitcroft, who dons more disguises over the years than Inspector Clouseau in order to dupe his way into the Open. Whether you are a fan of golf or not, it doesn’t matter. It would take a hardened heart to be untouched by this marvellous movie.
Screened outside at The Edward Alleyn Club, the perfect location to grab a drink from the well stocked bar.
Bring something to sit on, something waterproof and some warm layers! In case of rain, the screening will be relocated to inside the club.
FREE MAKES IT INCLUSIVE, DONATIONS MAKE IT HAPPEN
As part of this year’s Herne Hill Free Film Festival we are pleased to be supporting again the Lambeth & Croydon Food Bank, helping to raise awareness for this most worthy of local causes. Any donations by card or cash at each of our screenings would be greatly appreciated to help this wonderful charity continue its admirable work*
