Gureombi: The Wind is Blowing + Jeju’s Aching Heart + Q&A
Two documentaries about the peace movement on Jeju Island, South Korea. Villagers and activists fight to halt construction of a huge US naval base on ‘The Island of Peace.’
Jeju’s Aching Heart (Ireland 2014), Dir Peadar King, 25 mins, English / Korean with English subtitles
Gureombi: The Wind is Blowing (South Korea, 2013), Dir Sungbong Cho, 88 mins, Korean with English Subtitles
The Gureombi of Jeju Island is a unique 1km coastal formation of volcanic lava, considered sacred by local villagers on this beautiful Korean island. This film shows the desperate struggle of Jeju Island residents as the South Korean navy closes off access to the villagers’ sacred coast and starts destroying the Gureombi to construct a huge naval base to facillitate the US military ‘pivot to Asia’.
Peadar King’s short film made for TV broadcast by RTE in Ireland one year later shows villagers, priests, farmers and activists continuing the daily struggle against militarism and overwhelming police oppression.
Peadar King will attend the event and take part in a Q&A.
