Greta Gerwig has long been the darling of the American indie scene. Her graduation to more mainstream fare was inevitable, but she lost none of what made her such a compelling on-screen presence.
Stepping behind the camera for the first time, her semi-autobiographical comedy-drama is a smart coming-of-age tale that sidesteps cliches in favour of rich characterisation.
Saoirse Ronan has impressed since her breakthrough role in Atonement and here she gives one of her finest performances to date.
